Linking to AT841a

I purchased the AT841a microphone separately from the AT8531 power module -- I didn't know until the mic didn't work, there was a power module. I'm not an expert, as you can see. The mic came with a mini-XLR to mini-jack cable (mono). The power unit clearly expects a mini-XLR connection. I gather I need to buy a female/female mini-XLR cable, but what is the purpose of the mini-XLR to mini-jack cable?

Thank you!

With its half-space unidirectional polar pattern, low-profile design, and outstanding sound quality, the PRO 44 is ideal for conference tables, podiums, lecterns and other installed-sound uses. This versatile boundary mic’s self-contained electronics eliminate the need for external power modules. The PRO 44 is equipped with a wide-range condenser element with low-mass diaphragm for superior performance.

Range?

I have a conference table of 30 feet with people sitting on all sides. How many of these microphones would be required to pick up anyone sitting at the table?
