Offering the realism of a live sound field, the AT4050ST is a side-address condenser with cardioid and figure-of-eight elements configured in a Mid-Side arrangement. This innovative stereo condenser allows sound recordists the choice of selecting a left-right stereo output or choosing discrete Mid-Side signals for later manipulation, a remarkable flexibility. The microphone's dual-diaphragm capsules maintain precise polar pattern definition across the full frequency range. Its transformerless circuitry virtually eliminates low-frequency distortion.
I purchased an AT4050ST because I needed a stereo mic that would be able to give me quality sound in my tracks, but also lots of choices as to what I can do with it. I record vocals and guitar mostly, and it's just sooooo much easier to have a stereo mic that already has stereo modes built into it! I love the fact that you don't need to buy 2 mics that may or may not be figured correctly when you use them in a M/S setting or other. This mic also works excellent as an overhead mic for drums and chorus. There are a few stereo mics out there, but not with the quality like this, AND with Mid-Side and two different degree switches! This is the mic of the future guys! My tracks sound so much more professional! Thank you Audio Technica! You have surpassed all the others! This is my 'Go To' mic for all stereo apps!! Will be hard for anyone to pry this out of my hands!

The AT4050ST would be overkill next to the 4050 since the 4050ST already has 2 mics in it. If you add another mono mic like the 4050, you can create stereo audio with them both and save money, since the 4050ST is over $1000 US. Anyway, just my opinion.
