Audio-Technica’s premium professional studiophones offer a flat, extended frequency response for professional studio monitoring. Superior components provide very high SPL capabilities while maintaining exceptional clarity of sound. Exterior design features include sturdy strain-relief cable and comfortable circumaural earpieces that can be rotated 180º to permit one-ear monitoring. The studiophones utilize 40-millimeter drives with neodymium magnets and copper-clad aluminum wire voice coils for lowest mass. They are equipped with an 11-foot cable terminated in a standard ¼-inch connector. This field-serviceable model allows elements, cables, and earpads to be replaced in the field if needed.

I use this product at home for listening to music, recording music, and remixing music. The earpieces fold flat, so that I can fit them into my stereo cabinet (where they are out of the way). The cord is very long, and can be easily replaced if necessary. They are only well-suited for listening while sitting; this is not something you would use while jogging or moving a lot. I would recommend these headphones. The only thing I do not like about them is the way the earpieces rotate. It is convenient for storage, but I prefer headphones that are solid and only adjust to the size of your head. I gave them a 4 for durability because I suspect the rotating function of the earpieces makes the headphones more fragile, although nothing has broken on my headphones. I am very pleased with them regardless! I can hear sounds that I didn't hear before with my older headphones, which is a great plus.

are these a good choice to wear anywhere?

like at school, traveling, at house, anywhere except a studio.
I would only recommend these for home, or for any purpose that doesn't require you to move. The cord is 11' long, and you would have to roll it up if you wanted to walk around with your ipod hooked up to it. Also, you would have to put them in your book bag, and wrap them up in bubble wrap or something to keep them from getting damaged. These are studiophones, although you could possibly use them for other purposes as well. Personally, I use them at home (for listening to and recording music).

Does this pair of headphones require a headphone amplifier?

I've read on several websites that some headphones with different impedances require a headphone amplifier separate from an iPod or other mp3 player to function best is this true?

If so how where would I find one?
These headphones are actually pretty loud, and don't require extra amplification.

Straight Cord? (ATH-M40fs headphones)

There is no picture of the cord. I was wondering if it was a straight wire, or the curly cue kind? (ATH-M40fs headphones)
The cord is straight and 11' long.
